5 StarsA young couple are strolling the Christmas market when they tire and head for the car park discussing their Christmas plans. They are attacked in the garage and the man is felled by a blow to the head. The woman is kidnapped.
We are off on another fast and amazing ride through some incredible writing by Mr. Roughley.
When advised of their son's death, the mother goes ballistic in a very weird manner. She is key to this story. Lasser, Odette and Bannister are puzzled and frustrated at the man's death. There seems to be no reason for it. It was not a robbery and since the woman is missing, the focus is on her.
The head of a woman is found at an abandoned homestead. Lasser and Odette are attacked in the marketplace. There are some very strange goings on in this novel. And more murders are committed. As the pieces start to come together, Odette vanishes and Bannister is injured. The tension mounts in this fast paced thriller almost to the boiling point.
This is a wonderful book written by a remarkable writer. Mr. Roughley adds just the right amount of tension. With no wasted words, his books are classics. There is a bit of a cliffhanger, so be aware. Number fourteen is waiting in the wings.

As usual a great read, I have read them all and enjoy them more is new read.english detectives the best.
Great series even if the books are too short. But reduced rating by one star because I hate books that leave you hanging at the end with no following book to carry on the story.
WARNING Language, Sex, Incest, Rape, Murder & Mayhem
This is the 13th book in the series, only one more to go.
Lasser seems to be coming to grips with his feelings for a co-worker. Will they be returned?

This is book 13 of the DS Lasser series and a very good addition it is.
Lasser, Odette and Banister are brilliant in this book. No Plymouth but still some gruesome deaths.
This book had me gripped from the start and kept my attention all the way to the fantastic ending. An easy five star rating.

A year ago a friend of mine asked me if I'd read any of Robin Roughley's books, an author who sets his books around Wigan. I hadn't so I promptly downloaded book 1 in the series, "The Needle House".
After reading it I was hooked and to date I've read all of Mr, Roughley's books.
I wait with bated breath when I know a new was is due out.
As I know Wigan well, each book takes me on a journey around the town. I live in Spain so I love being reminded of the town.
Even though each book can be read as a stand-alone crime story, reading them in order allows you to follow the personal life of each character, and very interesting they are.
If you love crime/police-procedural thrillers and haven't read any Mr Roughley's books, I urge you to do so. You won't regret a minute of your reading time.
Loved this series - just finished #14 and i hope there are going to be more. Robin Roughley is very talented - reading his books rarely requires a leap of faith (so many books these days rely on lost cell phones etc).
Best book of the series. Every thing that you would want. My only complaint is, I was left on a cliff hanger. Looks like I am going to have to wait a long time for the next book
