Misery died so she could save the world. That’s what they told her. Turns out they lied. She was once a holy warrior with a noble cause. Now she’s using her earth magic to scrape by, meal to meal, motel to motel, city to city, one step ahead of those who call her traitor. Her jobs aren’t glamorous, but in the end, beggars can't be choosers and work pays the bills. Denver was supposed to be just one more stop over. But between an overly enthusiastic roommate, a gorgeous healer, and a challenging – not to mention lucrative – job for the Chimera Lord of Denver, Misery isn’t finding it easy to leave. When she discovers the lesser fae are going missing, Misery finds a new cause, a paycheck and many reasons to stay. She just hopes pursuing them won’t get her killed…again.

((Full disclosure: I am married to the author and I have followed, with interest, this story from inception, to publication, to now watching the sequel take shape.))Misery is a fallen warrior filled with faith but unable to find a place of refuge. Her backstory is only told in bits and flashes skillfully woven into the plot. This does a good job of fleshing out her wants and needs and yet leaves many questions remaining and most specifically the story of how she ended up where she is.
After finding a place that begins to feel like home, Misery is pulled into a power struggle taking place on the magical, inhuman side of Denver. Feeling her way through this struggle leads her to discover some new friends, and abilities and places her in a situation when she not only has to face her own inner fear of running or staying but also to allow those around her to also face their fears and make their own individual choices. This leads to a satisfying conclusion and a hint of more stories to come (which I’ll frankly confirm since I’m being already exposed to the sequel chapters).
The best parts of this book are the characters and character development. I haven’t met a single reader who hasn’t told me that “Jules is my favorite”. She does feature prominently in this book and acts to ground Misery to the mundane world. It feels wrong to say the Jules is a grounding character because she is so flighty and exuberant but I don’t think that saying ‘acts to air Misery’ would make any sense. In any case Jules is the bridge between the purely human world and the magical inhuman world.
The love interest angle of the book is handled very sweetly and the focus of that sub plot revolves around Misery and Evan. Evan is a powerful magic user in his own right, but often refrains from interfering both because of the particular intimacy his power creates and because he is a right hand man for one of the principals involved in the overall power struggle in Denver. The relationship between Misery and Evan develops slowly and reasons given in the story explain why both of them are hesitant to get involved in spite of their mutual attraction.
Other characters of note are Red, magical Denver’s Q and resident baseball fan. Kendra the strong willed and impatient Librarian (trust me, this is a title and should be capitalized here). And finally Haas who seems to say the things out loud that I often just think to myself.
Each character reacts naturally and believably to me and I think most of them will develop fans among readers. The book is enjoyable and a fast read.

Fallen Stone Sentinels of Essence Volume 1 Jana S Brown 9781546332497 Books Reviews
Compelling heist meets monsters story filled with the unexpected and a little magic. Misery is a great character. I like my MCs with just enough darkness and complexity to keep my curiosity piqued. She certainly did. All the cast surrounding her also had enough character in their character to keep me guessing and also make me hope for redemption and/or destruction. I enjoyed the Oceans 8-esque plot, too. I was surprised by the way the heist was woven into this intense mythology. There was a lot happening, but never too much.
My favorite parts of this book were
1) The well-integrated magic schema
2) The multicultural angle
3) The humor - comic relief character, Jules, made me laugh every time she was on the page.
For readers of magical realism and/or urban fantasy, I think this one is a hit. I'll definitely read more by this author.
This book was well written and highly entertaining. The author writes a really good action scene and created a super fun world with funny and interesting characters. Definitely a good buy!
Really enjoyed the diverse cast and the lore (I don't think I've read a book about stone chimeras before! I was pretty impressed by the opening -- I tried out a sample of the book, not sure if I wanted to buy it, but I was really hooked by the time the second chapter ended and I had to read more.
This may be one if the best and most enjoyable books that I've read in some time.
It immediately captures you with it's opening and then you find yourself mesmerized by all of the players and eager to find out what happens next. What makes it even better is that the flow of the story is extremely easy to follow along with and neatly ties together both the main storyline and the side story.
I can't wait for the next book in this series!
I like the heroine would like a little more backstory on what happened to her, but overall a good book and I look forward to the next one. Many questions arise and her adventures could go in many different directions.
Would like the next one to be slightly longer. Hope to see more soon
Great read! I really enjoyed this book a lot, I had a hard time putting it down! Great, fun characters, good plotline. It took me to a world within our world, even more fun since I've lived in Colorado, not far from Denver, most of my life! I loved the mix of magic and technology.
I would love to know more details of her past and the things that she did, why she left that life...
I highly recommend this book, and can't wait for the next one!
Jana Brown has a new fan! I loved the world-building, the character development, and the plot. Tension between all the characters was top-notch, and I couldn't get through this book fast enough--which is a shame, because now I hve to wait for the next book. A great series starter.
